Hay vs Straw

Basically there's no question in the matter - Hay all the way!

Although it may not be known by some people, hay and straw are very different things. Using straw can cause a lot of issues with guinea pigs, whereas hay is an essential for a healthy diet and a digestive system.

Telling the difference:

Hay

Hay is quite a fine and grass like substance because, after all, it actually is just dried grass. You can buy it in bags from your local supermarkets and pet shops for only about a couple of pounds, it is also very compact so you do get a lot of it cheaply!
Hay also is essential to guinea pigs as it keeps their digestive systems! Guinea pigs do need fresh hay every day though and whenever they run out, make sure it is topped up :)

Straw

Straw is quite a bright yellow colour and is actually in a straw/tube shape. Although people do say that straw is ok for guinea pigs because it is warm bedding, I would not recommend it as it can be quite sharp and might scratch your guinea(s) or get in their eyes.
